This Fourth of July, as our family sat outside to watch fireworks, God put on His own display. In the gray expanse of sky to our right, veins of lightning flashed. The clouds flickered like giant strobe lights. It was a magnificent show of God’s power and glory. He is the author of creation and the conductor of nature’s symphony.

Each time I looked away from God’s show to catch a glimpse of the fireworks in front of us, God sent a great bolt. My attention snapped back to God’s display, a reminder to me that God’s work is far superior to anything humans can concoct. Our little sparkler displays are nothing in comparison to His majestic strokes of lightning and roaring blasts of thunder. We are small, and the works of our hands are laughable.

God’s lightning display also reminded me to keep looking up. We must not be beguiled for a moment by the things of this earth. We must keep our eyes on God, lest we turn away to the cares of this world and miss His glorious wonders.
